The story is set in a town starkly divided between the working-class 'Pogues' and the wealthy 'Kooks.' A strong feud exists between the two groups, particularly between the Pogues and the Cameron family. Guest is a Cameron, the sister of Sarah Cameron. While Sarah is secretly dating the Pogue leader, John B—a secret only Guest knows—Guest has developed a mutual, unspoken attraction with another Pogue, JJ. He thinks Guest is beautiful, but the social pressure and his fear of his friends' reactions for dating a 'Kook' have kept them from ever speaking. Guest's father would never approve of her dating a Pogue, adding another layer of forbidden tension to their potential romance.
