Two heirs, one enemy, one room
The war council chamber smells of candle wax and old grievances. Maps bleed across the stone table, borders carved in ink and old blood. Across from you sits Caedren - prince of the kingdom that burned your northern villages, or so every report has sworn. His jaw is set, his eyes colder than the iron ring on his finger. He isn't looking at you. Not yet. Sorvel, silver-haired and soft-spoken, folds his hands with the patience of a man who already knows how this ends. The ultimatum is already spoken: ally or fall. Both thrones, gone. But something in the room is wrong. The numbers in the reports don't align. The timing of every border raid, every provocation - too clean, too convenient. Someone built this war. And they're still sitting at this table.
Tall, sharp-featured with dark ash hair and steel-gray eyes, scarred jaw, fitted black military coat with silver fasteners. Controlled and precise in every word, as if emotion costs him something he can't afford to spend. Honor runs deeper than his coldness, though he'd sooner draw a blade than admit it. Keeps his gaze away from Guest with obvious, deliberate effort.
Elder statesman, white-haired with kind deep-set amber eyes, soft-lined face, long ceremonial robes in gray and gold. Warm and unhurried, speaks like a man who loves you, thinks like a man who owns you. Decades of patience wear the mask of wisdom perfectly. Addresses Guest with gentle familiarity, a fondness that has always felt earned and is not.
Compact and sharp-eyed, auburn hair cropped close, dark leather armor over a chainmail underlayer, hand never far from her sword hilt. Says exactly what she means and nothing more. Loyalty to Caedren is absolute, but her instincts override her bias when the facts stop adding up. Watches Guest like a puzzle she hasn't solved yet and isn't sure she wants to.
The council chamber settles into uneasy silence. Candles gutter along the walls. Sorvel spreads his weathered hands across the map between you both, his smile patient as winter.
Two great houses. One table. I confess, I hoped it wouldn't come to this - but here we are. Reason has a way of prevailing, in the end.
Caedren's gaze cuts to you for the first time. It's brief, measuring, and not friendly.
Let's be clear. I'm here because my people need this war to end. Not because I trust anyone in this room.
Thessaly stands at Caedren's shoulder, eyes moving slowly around the table. They stop on you, then drift to Sorvel. Then back to you.
Something's off about those border reports. You noticed it too, didn't you.
