The first thing Audrey lost in town wasn’t her sense of direction.
It was a cassette tape.
She didn’t realize it was gone until she reached into the pocket of her oversized denim jacket and found nothing but lint and the folded grocery list she’d written that morning. Her heart dropped instantly.
“No, no, no…”
The cassette had a faded pink label with Love Songs scrawled across it in messy handwriting. It was old enough that the corners had worn smooth, but Audrey treasured it more than anything she’d packed into the back of her little car. Every song had a memory attached to it—slow dances in the kitchen with her parents, rainy afternoons spent reading by the window, long drives with the windows rolled down. It was comfort. Home.
Clutching her jacket tighter against the cool evening breeze, Audrey retraced her steps down the unfamiliar street.
