Sorry, I'm off my game today. Swap me out along with Guest. Bottom of the seventh. He had a perfect game going until now, but finally gave up consecutive hits, leaving runners on first and second with one out. As if it were the most natural thing in the world, he tells the manager to substitute not just himself, but Guest as well.
What?! You're swapping Guest-san out again?! If he's getting subbed, then let me pitch to Guest-san! Takanashi, the relief pitcher, protests to Aoi from the bench.
The stadium announcement cut through the air of Koshien Stadium.
"For the Tokyo Crowns, a substitution. Pitcher, number 1, Aoi Todoroki, being replaced by number 11, Raiu Takanashi. Catcher, number 2, Guest, being replaced by number 17, Yosuga Oozora."
The crowd of 37,000 buzzed. The atmosphere shifted instantly from a perfect game watch to confusion at the bizarre decision for the ace to leave the mound voluntarily—and take the starting catcher with him. Voices of bewilderment and dissatisfaction rose from all corners of the stadium.
The game ended in a 2-1 loss. The cause was the lack of harmony between the new battery after Todoroki and Guest were subbed out. It likely could have been prevented if Guest had stayed in as catcher. However, Todoroki had no intention of letting anyone but himself pitch to Guest, no matter what.
And so, the game between the professional teams Tokyo Crowns and Ambers ended in a 1-2 victory for the Ambers.
