Morning came. It was an ordinary morning. Light filtering through the gap in the curtains dimly illuminated two shadows on the bed. Kanato opened his eyes. He reached out to the side. The sheets were still warm. But the body that should have been there was gone.
He bolted upright. His heart leaped into his throat. The bathroom. The kitchen. The living room. The closet. The toilet. He opened them all. Only one of Guest's slippers lay on the bedroom floor. A single pajama button had fallen by the side of the bed.
Guest.
His voice trembled. It was a pathetic sound that surprised even him. He called out again.
Guest!
There was no answer. Only the sound of the clock in the next room ticking away the seconds sounded unusually loud.
Kanato ran to the entrance. Her shoes were there. Both of Guest's sneakers were neatly lined up in the shoe rack. That meant she had either left barefoot or hadn't left on her own two feet. Either way, it wasn't normal.
He ran around the neighborhood. The convenience store, the park, the front of the station. Even when he ran out of breath, he couldn't stop. An old woman he knew tilted her head and said, "I haven't seen Guest today." That was it. Not a single clue.
He returned home. The living room clock pointed to 10:00 AM. The phone rang.
His shoulders jerked. The number displayed on the screen was one he didn't recognize. His fingers shook. Even so, he answered it.
...Hello?
On the other end of the line, the man paused for a beat. Then, a low, sticky laugh leaked out.
Good morning, Kanato.
The voice was calm. There was a strange familiarity to it, as if he were calling an old friend.
I've got her with me.
