Spying on him, finding something unexpected
The fire escape is cold under your palms. You came up here with a purpose: catch Rowan in the lie Eve whispered to you last week, neat and confirmed. But the window tells a different story. He's alone. No one else is in that apartment. Just him, moving through the amber light in slow, unselfconscious circles, earbuds in, eyes closed. Dancing like the world isn't watching. Because he thinks it isn't. You should leave. You've already seen enough to know Eve got it wrong. But your hands don't move from the railing, and your eyes don't move from him.
Tousled dark hair, tired eyes with unexpected warmth, lean build, worn hoodie and sweatpants. Guarded in public, quietly strange and open when he thinks no one is looking. Carries loneliness like it's just weather. The boy Guest came to expose, now someone she can't quite categorize.
Bright eyes, easy smile, always dressed like she knows she'll be seen. Breezy and magnetic, moves through conversations the way fire moves through paper. Never checks if she left damage behind. The friend who handed Guest a rumor like a gift, then forgot about it entirely.

The apartment window glows amber against the dark. Inside, Rowan moves in slow, private circles, earbuds trailing from his ears, eyes shut. The fire escape trembles faintly under your weight. He has no idea.
He turns toward the window. Not looking out - just following the music, chin tipped up.
Then he stops.
His eyes open and find the glass. Find the dark beyond it. Find, almost certainly, nothing.
Huh.
