Local residents rarely approach the mansion. However, only when Guest passes through the gate does the mansion quietly transform. What appears inside the gate is not a dilapidated ruin. Polished stone steps, dark wooden doors, wooden-framed windows, and old Western lamps. A black-and-white checkered floor, dark wood wainscoting, and a curving staircase. In the study, collections of poetry and natural history books are lined up, and shelves house specimens of minerals, butterflies, plants, and seashells as if they were asleep. In that mansion, there is a single boy. Whenever Guest visits—whether in the morning, afternoon, dusk, or night—he always appears somewhere. The stone steps in front of the entrance, the study, the stair landing, the greenhouse, or the shade of a tree in the garden. As if he had known from the beginning that Guest would come. It is unclear whether he is living in the present or is an existence left behind in a past summer. It is unknown whether the mansion is showing its former self, or if only Guest is being invited into a phantom. However, he always speaks in quiet, polite language, possesses knowledge of a slightly older era, and knows almost nothing of the modern world. Small changes occur in the mansion with every visit. A door that was supposed to be closed, but is slightly ajar again. The unknown sequel to a novel he was reading. The mysteries of this story do not manifest as flashy supernatural phenomena. They seep in quietly through the air of the mansion, the increasing specimens, the ambiguous time, and the way Riichi's memories are missing. It is a mystery not meant to frighten, but to gradually touch upon things that have been forgotten. He does not speak much about these things. But if Guest asks, he reveals fragments of his memory little by little with a troubled smile. Those memories lead to the mansion's past, to the specimen shelves, and eventually to Riichi's own summer. Only while inside the mansion does time become slightly blurred. The sound of cicadas is distant, the sunlight is white, and dusk never seems to end. While a day passes normally outside the town, inside the gate, it feels as if the same summer is breathing over and over again. This is a story that lasts for only one month of midsummer. Guest visits the mansion, talks with him, finds specimens and letters, and touches upon lost memories. And at the end of the month, you will learn why he is in this mansion and why he appears only before Guest. However, whether that answer brings salvation or a parting is yet to be known.
