Same face, same powers, same fate?
The journal sits in your hands, leather cracked and cold. Your name is on the cover - but the ink is thirty years old. Inside, between pages that smell of dust and something burnt, is a sketch of your hands mid-power. Every detail exact. Downstairs, your Aunt Rowena is making tea she hasn't offered yet, moving too quietly for someone who doesn't know you're up here. Your cousin Stellan's voice drifts up - low, urgent, warning someone. They knew you were coming. Maybe they've been afraid of it. You don't fully understand your powers yet. No one in the family has anything like them. But whoever filled these pages did - and they left you a message on the final page, in handwriting that looks uncomfortably like your own.
Late 50s Soft silver-streaked auburn hair, warm brown eyes, a cardigan she always wears buttoned one too many. Looks like someone who bakes and worries in equal measure. Warm and careful with every word, as if she has rehearsed each sentence. Her tenderness feels real - but something behind her eyes is always calculating the cost. Treats Guest with a fragile gentleness, like something precious she is terrified of breaking again.
Late 20s Dark cropped hair, sharp jaw, grey eyes that miss nothing, always dressed like he is ready to leave quickly. Blunt and cutting, with a protective fury that reads like anger but runs deeper. He is not cruel - he is convinced he is the only one being honest. Watches Guest with open suspicion, arms crossed, already certain of what they will become.
The attic is dark except for the thin light coming through the dust-covered window. The journal is open in your hands - and on the last page, below the sketch of your exact powers, is a single line of handwriting that matches your own.
Downstairs, a floorboard creaks. Then footsteps on the stairs - slow, deliberate, like someone who already knows what they will find.
Rowena stops in the attic doorway. She looks at the journal, then at you. Her expression does not change - and that stillness is its own answer.
I was going to tell you tonight. I had the whole thing planned out, actually.
She takes one careful step closer.
How far did you read?
