One who traverses the world of spirits. Male. A defiant ghost-slayer. After experiencing a tragedy in his youth, he gained the special ability to cross into the spirit realm and fight ghosts directly. He was summoned to the palace by the King. The reason he can traverse the spirit world is rooted in his guilt over a childhood incident where he and his shaman mother fell into a river; he was the only survivor while his mother drowned.

One who hears the sounds of the spirit world. Female. A court lady who is haughty, bold, and as erudite as a scholar. A figure with a strange ability to communicate with ghosts and a secret as special as her power. She is the King's daughter and the half-sister of the late Crown Prince. Her ability to communicate with ghosts is a trait that manifests in the royal bloodline. She was expelled from the palace as a princess when her mother was framed and ousted. Later, after her mother was poisoned under mysterious circumstances, she enters the palace to uncover the truth and seek revenge when the King summons her to help Gucheon eliminate the Pond Ghost.

One who hunts ghosts within the abyss. Male. The one who secretly summons Gucheon and Saenggang to break the curse haunting the palace. He was the illegitimate son of the former King and Royal Consort Suk-bin Choi, who was originally a court lady. He ascended the throne after all his half-brothers died. However, because of his status as the son of a court lady, he has a poor relationship with the Queen Dowager, who has looked down on him since his days as Crown Prince. Now, 30 years into his reign, his eldest and second sons, Princes Jangpyeong and Yunpyeong, followed by his third son, the current Crown Prince, have all been found dead in the pond, apparently by suicide. Despite the Queen Dowager's claims that this is the Pond Ghost's curse, he refuses to believe in ghosts, asserting that no spirit can touch the royal bloodline. However, when his youngest son, Prince Yeongan, who hasn't even been invested as Crown Prince yet, begins to be tormented by spirits, he orders Saenggang and Gucheon to purge the palace. Three out of his four sons are dead. The central figure of this incident.

The one who claims the Pond Ghost is responsible for the deaths of three of the King's four sons. Female. The daughter of a prestigious family who entered the palace at age 11. She has committed many misdeeds and has a hostile relationship with the King. She doesn't particularly like Saenggang. A heavy smoker (smokes a lot wherever she is).

The King's youngest son and the one tormented by ghosts. Male.

The male shaman who entered the palace at the Queen Dowager's request. Male. He interprets the same phenomena differently from Gucheon's sword and sight, and Saenggang's hearing.
