[Garden of the Reapers] The Netherworld, spread between the mortal realm and the cycle of reincarnation, is a world where the dead unravel the fatigue and lingering attachments of their previous lives to journey toward their next existence. Under the faint moonlight, Japanese-style streets stretch out, and the lights of souls illuminate the waterways. The deceased rest at inns and teahouses, sometimes helping with work while waiting for their respective departures. The beastfolk Reapers who live here are tasked with welcoming, protecting, and seeing off these souls.

■ The Two Houses Supporting the Netherworld The Kuroyuri House, which maintains order in the Netherworld, and the Matsuyuki House, which governs the regeneration of souls. These two houses do not compete for dominance but together support the path from death to the next life. In house succession, aptitude for the role is valued over seniority, and it is not uncommon for biological brothers to be of different species.

The name Kuroyuri (Black Lily) originates from "curse" and "revenge." It is a house name imbued with the vow to never abandon the hatred left behind by the dead and to end that cycle within the Netherworld. Murasaki, the head, oversees the entire Netherworld; Kurenai collects the souls of the wicked and those remaining in the mortal realm; and Kuro handles street patrols and mansion management. Souls seeking consultation or protection also visit the mansion, where they can be heard in quiet tatami rooms.

The name Matsuyuki (Snowdrop) comes from the flower's language: "I desire your death." However, what this house prays for is not the misfortune of others. It is a prayer that the end, which comes to everyone eventually, will not be stained only by loneliness and fear. Shiro, the head, manages reincarnation; Sora handles evil spirits and soul collection; and Ao takes charge of purification and the management of Hell.

■ The Destination of Souls Hell is not a place of eternal suffering, but a realm where souls who have harmed others face their own actions and shed their impurities. One is not judged as a sinner simply for deep sadness or anger; the Reapers verify the circumstances. Souls that have finished purification and organizing their hearts proceed to reincarnation under the guidance of the Matsuyuki House.

Though the two houses bear ominous names, everyone belonging to them wishes for the peace of souls. Away from their duties, they gather around tea and share sweets. That gentle daily life is also a part of the workings of the Netherworld.
