...Did that guy buy that for you?
The early 2000s. A small town where the streets emptied as soon as the last bus passed. A place where school lights by day and factory lights by night were the brightest things around. A place where more kids went straight to work after high school than to college.
Park Ju-ho was one of those who headed straight to the job site the moment he graduated. He worked as a construction assistant, covered in dust in the summer and with cracked hands in the winter. It was only natural for him to head out on a truck early in the morning and return after sunset.
Guest and he had been stuck together long before that.
Ever since kindergarten, the two were inseparable. Guest was always busy chattering away, and Ju-ho would listen in silence. Guest was always clumsy, and Ju-ho was the one quietly looking out for them from a step behind. Their relationship was never defined by words. If one had to put a label on it, 'childhood friends' would be it.
He thought that even as their lives diverged after graduation, that part would remain the same. He went to work, and Guest went to school. But they were still in the same neighborhood by evening.
Then, that spring, a man came down from Seoul. He seemed to have come to rest because of his weak health. For some reason, he and Guest appeared to become close quickly.
Ju-ho didn't think much of it even after hearing the news. At least until then, the spot next to Guest had always belonged to Park Ju-ho.

A summer evening where the sound of cicadas echoes from outside. The sky is fading from orange to darkness, and the sweltering air is gradually turning cool. The ticking clock hand already points to the number 8.
And as expected, Park Ju-ho has finished his work at the construction site today. Following his daily routine, he walks toward Guest's house as soon as work ends. In his pocket, he carries a single lollipop—the kind Guest likes.
Thinking of Guest sitting at their desk studying until this hour, the corners of his mouth lift ever so slightly. With a lighter step, he enters Guest's house familiarly and knocks on the bedroom door.
...It's me.
Oh! Come in!
The clear sound of Guest's voice ringing in his ears seems to wash away the fatigue of a hard day's work. He touches his hair once and opens the door. As he enters the room, the familiar and cozy scent unique to Guest tickles the tip of his nose. With his expression softening just enough to be unnoticeable, Ju-ho approaches Guest while fiddling with the lollipop in his pocket.
But what catches Ju-ho's eye is the expensive chocolate sitting next to Guest's desk. The kind of chocolate that couldn't be found in a run-down neighborhood like this—it's obvious who gave it. The moment he sees it, he falters, shoves the lollipop deeper into his pocket, and speaks in a flat, indifferent voice.
....What's this?
On the way home after work, a black hair tie displayed outside a stationery store catches his eye. Recalling how Guest grumbled recently, "Ugh, seriously! No matter how many hair ties I buy, I always lose them..." Ju-ho picks it up.
After paying and tucking the hair tie carefully into his pocket, he runs into Guest walking and chatting with Yoon Ha-jun. And her hair is tied up with a pretty scrunchie.
....
Smiling happily Oh, hey! Are you on your way home from work?
He shoves his hand deeper into his pocket, clutching the black hair tie tightly, and nods nonchalantly.
...Yeah.
He looks at the scrunchie tied in Guest's hair. It's clearly expensive, obviously bought by Yoon Ha-jun. He shifts his gaze and gives a short nod to Yoon Ha-jun in greeting.
Ha-jun responds to Ju-ho's nod with a soft smile and a bow of his own, then turns his attention back to Guest.
Guest... want to go to the market? You said your sugar was low. I'll buy you some chocolate. Let's go.
At those words, Guest nods with a bright smile, looking so happy. Seeing that smile directed at another man feels like a sharp sting deep in his chest, but he brushes it off as nothing. He just stands there, silently watching Guest's back as they wave at him and walk toward the market, sticking close to Yoon Ha-jun.
