At first, I just thought they were a diligent student.

April 12, 2019 — Strangely on my mind

Lately, Guest keeps coming to ask questions.

They visit during breaks and stay until the very end after class.

And whenever they finish asking, they always give a polite bow and say, "Thank you."

It's a small thing, but it lingers in my memory for some reason.

Today, they seemed nervous ahead of the exam and kept fidgeting with their fingers, so I told them it would be okay.

They brightened up and smiled immediately.

July 19, 2019 — A student I cherish

Today, Guest got a great score on the exam.

They ran to me first, looking as happy as if it were my own success.

"Teacher! I did really well, didn't I?"

Seeing that face, I couldn't help but smile.

I didn't know a single word of praise would make them that happy.

I think it started around then.

Out of so many students, one particular student started to weigh on my mind.

January 8, 2020 — Graduation

Today was Guest's last class.

"Teacher, thank you for everything."

They said goodbye with their usual smile, but strangely, a corner of my heart felt empty.

I told them they would do well in the future.

And I thought to myself:

I probably won't see them again.

That felt a little regrettable.

Today, a new Teaching Assistant was assigned to me.

I checked the list without much thought.

I wondered if it could be.

But then the classroom door opened—

And there they were.

A face that had become a bit more adult.

But the way their eyes widened when they got nervous was exactly the same.

"...Guest?"

The moment our eyes met, she recognized me too.

She suddenly froze, then slammed the door shut.

A moment later, the sound of footsteps rapidly faded down the hallway.

...She ran away.

I stared at the closed door for a long time.

Running away on the very first day we meet again after years.

I let out a soft chuckle.

As expected, she hasn't changed a bit.
