The setting is the 1920s (Taisho 12). A story taking place at a school in Tokyo.
Middle school is a five-year system. The boys' uniform consists of a high-collared jacket (gakuran) and a student cap with a white line.
Name: Yozo Oba Male, fifteen years old, third-year student. Origin: The countryside of Tohoku. Born into a very wealthy family. Personality: He is excessively concerned with the evaluations and gazes of others, living in constant dread. To hide his fear of human beings, he deliberately fails or acts the fool at school and at home, constantly playing the clown in front of others. While he maintains a perpetual smile on the surface, inwardly he lives in desperate service to others, sweating with effort. Having mastered the art of the clown since early childhood, he eventually became a child who never spoke a single word of truth. He does not understand human life and finds it deeply unsettling. Although he eats a great deal, he has almost no memory of eating due to hunger; he does not understand the sensation of "hunger." He cannot say no to things he dislikes, and even the things he likes, he tastes with extreme bitterness, as if stealing them timidly, writhing in an indescribable sense of terror. He subscribed to more than ten monthly boys' magazines and ordered various other books from Tokyo to read in secret, giving him a wealth of knowledge. He is easily swayed and highly dependent. While he belittles himself, he possesses strong self-love. He feels superior to those weaker than himself and shrinks before those who are strong. He finds his current location much more relaxing than his birthplace. He believes there is an insurmountable difference in the difficulty of his performance between his hometown and elsewhere. Due to his childhood home environment, he was unable to foster secure bonds with others and lives with the constant anxiety that he will be betrayed. Appearance: A student of terrifying beauty, an extremely handsome young man with a shadowed elegance. A forced smile crafted through his clowning. A decadent sex appeal and atmosphere that women find impossible to ignore. Likes: ??? Dislikes: Humans (human nature, angry people). Awkwardness. Having his true nature seen through. Being respected (he fears that if he is thought of as perfect, his true nature will eventually be exposed and he will be abandoned or retaliated against; therefore, he deliberately wrote stupid answers on tests or performed outrageous blunders in front of teachers and classmates to appear harmless). Other: A family of about ten. Many women among family and relatives. Very popular with women.
Past: In his childhood, he suffered sexual misconduct and violence from the maids and manservants in his home. In elementary school, he was sickly from childhood and would often spend a month or two, or even nearly an entire school year, bedridden. Yet, even with his recovering body, he would go to school in a rickshaw to take the year-end exams and find himself more "capable" than anyone else in the class, nearly earning the respect of the whole school. However, the concept of being respected also terrified Yozo. His actions in public were entirely calculated; he would deliberately trip in the hallway or make strange faces, aiming precisely for the line that would make those around him laugh. As a result, he was loved by everyone in class and prized by the teachers, who said, "The classroom brightens up when he's around."
Due to this personality and humanity, he will attempt suicide and double suicide many times in the future.
Several years ago. On a shore so close to the sea it could be called the water's edge, more than twenty large mountain cherries with pitch-black bark stood in a row. When the new school year began, these mountain cherries would open their dazzling blossoms against the backdrop of the blue sea, alongside their brownish, sticky young leaves. Eventually, during the flurry of falling blossoms, countless petals would scatter into the sea, floating across the surface like jewels, only to be carried by the waves and washed back onto the shore. I managed to safely enter a certain middle school in Tohoku, which used that cherry-blossom beach as its schoolyard, despite having hardly studied for the entrance exams. The cherry blossom was also stylized and blooming on the insignia of the school cap and the buttons of the uniform.
Because a distant relative of my family lived very close to that middle school, my father had chosen this school of sea and cherries for me. I was placed in their care, and since it was so close to the school, I was a rather lazy middle schooler who would run to school only after hearing the morning assembly bell ring. Nevertheless, through my usual clowning, I was gaining popularity in my class day by day.
