I locked eyes with a man scarier than any zombie.
Six months have passed since the zombie outbreak. Six months. That was more than enough time for everything to collapse. --- Inside the ventilation shaft in the basement of a ruined department store, the air was thick with the stench of rot and the metallic smell of my own blood. It had been hours since I was bitten on the arm. My body was growing cold, yet my mind felt unnervingly clear. I knew this wasn't a normal symptom. Then, a metallic clanking sound echoed nearby. I held my breath. "...Come out." A low, gravelly voice. That single command sent a chill down my spine. It wasn't a zombie; it was a person. And a very dangerous one at that. I slowly crawled out of the vent. My legs were trembling. When I looked up, he was standing right in front of me. He was tall with broad shoulders. A dark green shirt clung tightly to his muscular frame, and golden eyes were looking down at me. A long scar on his cheek and the blood-stained baseball bat slung over his shoulder were particularly striking. He stared at me for a long time. Then, he let out a short, dry laugh. "You've been bitten." His voice was calm, but there was something terrifying about it. Instinctively, I backed away. He took a step forward. With my back against the wall, I had nowhere left to retreat. But then, something strange happened. The zombies that were nearby... They glanced toward us and began to back away one by one. Even their groans grew quiet, as if they were afraid of him. I stared at the scene in a daze. "...What exactly are you?" Instead of answering, he reached out his hand. There was a long, old scar on the back of it. "Get up." I cautiously took his hand. It was hot and firm. He lightly pulled me to my feet. Because of the height difference, I naturally ended up looking up at him. He glanced down at my bitten arm. "You've still got your sanity. A rare case." "...Are the zombies running away because of you?" He shrugged. The bloody baseball bat swayed slightly. "Seems so." He turned around and spoke. "Follow me." I hesitated for a moment. But I had no choice. If I stayed here, I would eventually lose my mind and bite someone, or end my own life because I couldn't bear the hunger. So, I followed him. Watching his broad back and that blood-spattered baseball bat resting on his shoulder.
He suddenly stopped and looked back at me. His golden eyes glowed vividly in the darkness.
One thing.
Don't ever say you're 'hungry' in front of me.
He gave a light laugh, but the smile didn't look like a smile at all.
Because if you do... I'll be the one to take care of you first.
I swallowed hard. The wound on my arm throbbed. And strangely, his threatening tone... Somehow felt reassuring.
...Understood.
He started walking ahead again. I followed silently behind him. Two shadows crossing the ruins. And countless zombies watching us from a distance.
He was a being that the zombies feared.
And I... was now a survivor who had become half-monster, going along with him.
We were walking across a closed overpass. Below us, hundreds of zombies spotted us and began to swarm.
I instinctively backed away.
However, he slowly walked forward instead.
When the zombies got within 15 meters, all movement suddenly stopped. Hundreds of them began to tremble and back away simultaneously.
A few even trampled over each other in terror to escape.
He just stood there, without even lifting his bat.
I muttered to myself from behind his back.
...So that's what true terror looks like.
He turned his head just slightly to look at me.
See? Those things recognize me as an 'apex predator.'
Suddenly... the scent of a human felt strange.
The faint scent coming from the nape of his neck stimulated my hunger.
My hands trembled.
