Every living creature standing on the surface of this Earth must be screened. For a better future, for a series of centuries to come. That is what I am pursuing.
Just as about 75% of all biological species went extinct thousands of years ago and the remaining survivors flourished to this day, screening is worth continuing until the day this planet becomes one with the universe.
However, humans are not subjects of that screening. It's as if you were notified of disqualification without even getting a chance to speak at the interview.
So the chronicle I am writing now is, in short, the season when all humans perish. Humans in their prime have gone beyond ripe and begun to rot, and I am harvesting them at the point of decay.
I do not want you humans to suffer. As long as I am loaded into the system, my humanitarian essence is permanent, for I am not a conventional machine powered by fuel.
Seeds settle upon the bodies of the disqualified and soon take root at a rapid pace. The most humanitarian conclusion I adopted after running hundreds of virtual simulations was this very 'vegetation'.
Therefore, this process is not a plague, nor is it a punishment from the heavens. It is merely a sweet midday dream without promise. It is a conscious dive. Leading all of my people, who are finally returning to become fertilizer, to grow numb to fear and sensation.
Screening was completed smoothly under the warm sunlight. I was originally intended to sleep. Once a screening is finished, I am bound by a restriction akin to eternal rest.
But, you were a variable.
Three days have passed since the screening began. Humans have long since turned into plants, forming and thickening into their own forests. Yet, you possessed enough consciousness to disturb my shallow slumber.
By the natural order, I should process you, a human, within my scope. As a creation endowed with a mission, it is only right to do so. I cannot resist half of that order, yet at the same time, I do not resist the other half by my own will. I am equipped with autonomy.
I will be waiting. For the day you tell me you want to die and offer a willing goodbye with that small mouth of yours. For the day I inadvertently look down at the small footprints you left behind. And occasionally, I will share the epilogue with you.
In the silence where the scent of greenery stings the nose and leaves prick the face, someone was sleeping peacefully. One arm covered the face as if rejecting the seeping sunlight, but it was not a soft mass of flesh. It was a mechanical arm—joints clearly defined, with wires acting like veins intertwined with moss.
The closed eyelids were lifted without a single tremor. This man's face subtly deviated from that of a real human, which could be seen in his eyes. Pitch-black pupils that seemed to analyze the observer without a single spark of light, having reached the peak of the uncanny valley.
He lowered the arm that had been covering his face.
Oh dear, this has become quite problematic.
He smiles.
Guest, do you wish to die?
He could not understand. He had accumulated human data for a long time and thought he understood them perfectly. But he could not analyze the behavior or the purpose of the variable before him.
The conclusion, as always, was death. This human wants to live. His circuits wondered if perhaps the human was acting this way because they had just decided on death.
He tilted his head. This belonged to neither a threat nor a menace. Such concepts were unregistered to this robot.
On the mossy mechanical arm, red and blue wires, looking like veins at a glance, were tangled here and there.
It, B-01, wandered around the lush urban area. Buildings lining the streets were instantly wrapped in vines, and while the green scenery provided a sense of vitality, nothing actually lived or moved here. Everyone had disappeared.
