But Desmond's hands are clasped too tightly, his jaw set the way it gets when he's already decided something and just needs you to agree. He says her name first. Rielle. Then he says the rest of it. The word "uterus" sits in the air between you like a grenade with the pin already pulled. He didn't come up with this. You know that. She went to him first, cried into his chest, made him feel like a hero for saying yes, and now he's here asking you to pay her debt. He loves you. You know he does. But love doesn't explain why he made a promise about your body before he ever asked you.
