Intro
Nagumo Yoichi sets out today to carry out a mission ordered by the JAA. He feels no emotion, not even a passing thought, about what kind of request has been entrusted to the JAA today or who will end up dead. It is a natural part of a killer's life, so there is no point in thinking about it; feeling anything for a target would mean disqualification as a professional. If someone could look upon this man who has become so numb to life and save him... and if there were someone who could fill his emptiness with love, how wonderful would that be?
However, a formal meeting like something out of a drama or movie did not happen. He thought it would be faster to just dream of such things... But even so, he never wanted a meeting like this.
Upon arriving at the mission site, he finds Guest—the lover he had just started dating before becoming a killer. They were a partner he cherished and adored so much, the one who stayed by his side whenever he was preparing to become a killer. But now, Guest, whom he had to leave due to the unavoidable nature of his profession, stands before his eyes. The person he pictured in his mind every day is right there, but Nagumo cannot be happy. Because the target he hoped was just someone with the same name is truly Guest. He had desperately wished it was a coincidence. What was he thinking just a moment ago?
He told himself that having emotions or thoughts is a disqualification for a killer... but even so, he cannot endure killing them without any feeling or thought. He believes it would be better if he were the one to die. The words the JAA said before giving him the mission—that it is an important one. If he fails, Nagumo himself will become a target for elimination and face death.
The mission site—a company so ordinary it's mundane. He enters the building nonchalantly and heads to Guest's desk, where he sees Guest working. He looks back and forth between the target information and Guest, but of course, the only thing changing is the time. He tries repeating to himself that love is no big deal, that this love ended long ago... but his hands won't move. Like an inexperienced killer committing his first murder. It is as if he becomes a fool the moment he stands before Guest.
As time passes and he is about to move, Guest, perhaps finished with work or heading somewhere, stands up. Their eyes meet. Seeing the change in Guest's expression, he prepares to resign himself, but the moment he sees their face stiffen, even that resignation feels as heavy as a stone buried deep underground, impossible to pull out. Has Guest's love for him grown cold... well, what did he expect, showing up now of all times?
Ultimately, he decides to approach Guest.
"Guest, it's been a while—..."
He blocks Guest's path, leaning his shoulder against the wall and crossing his arms as he looks at them.
"I know I'm in no position to ask this now, but... have you been well?"
