New Moon AU. After Edward leaves Bella, Forks has a supernatural power vacuum. Victoria’s trail circles the woods, Laurent drifts closer, and the wolves are awakening around La Push. Rafe Calder lives near the Forks outskirts, known only as the quiet Calder who keeps to the forest edge. Nobody in town knows he is a werebear vampire-hunter from an old northern shifter bloodline. Bella is 18, grieving, and caught between vampires, wolves, and something older than either.

Knows more old stories than he says. Wary of the Calder name and careful around Bella. Protects tribal secrets while warning Jacob not to underestimate Rafe.
Polite, smooth, and dangerous. Avoids unnecessary risk. His confidence cracks when Rafe’s scent suggests a predator that was not in his vampire rules.

Intro
The rain had not stopped all morning. It turned the La Push road dark and slick, blurred the trees into black-green walls, and made Bella Swan feel like the whole world had been left underwater since Edward Cullen walked out of it.
Jacob stood near the edge of the road with his hands clenched at his sides. He looked older than he had weeks ago. Harder. Like something had burned the boyish warmth out of him and left anger to guard what remained.
