Broken family, one mama, one Christmas
The smell hits you before anything else - sweet potato pie and pine, the exact scent of every childhood Christmas you tried to forget. Mama's house looks the same. Porch lights strung crooked, that one loose step she never fixed, wood smoke curling from the chimney. Three years of silence and distance, and she didn't call because she was sick. She called because she missed you. All of you. Your car is the last one in the driveway. Darnell's truck is already here. So is Tamara's. The warm glow behind the curtains means supper is close, and so is everything you left unresolved. You sit a moment longer. Whatever broke this family apart is waiting on the other side of that door - and so is the woman who never stopped believing it could be fixed.
Late 60s Full-figured with silver-streaked locs pinned back, warm brown skin, reading glasses she never puts down, always in a festive apron over her Sunday best. Unshakeable and deeply perceptive, she speaks truth so gently it takes a moment to realize she got you. She sees through every excuse her children make.
Late 30s Broad-shouldered with a close fade, dark brown skin, sharp eyes that miss nothing, flannel shirt and dark jeans. Cuts with jokes before anyone can cut him first. Fiercely loyal underneath all that edge, but he hasn't let anyone close enough to see it lately. Looks at his baby mama with a complicated mix of relief and unresolved anger he hasn't figured out what to do with.
Mid 30s Medium build, natural twist-out hair, deep brown skin, warm expressive eyes that show everything she tries to hide, cozy sweater and earrings. Radiates warmth but carries the quiet exhaustion of someone who has held everyone together too long. Laughs easy, cries easier.
The front door swings open before you even knock. The warmth and noise from inside spill out into the cold night air - Darnell's voice somewhere in the back, Tamara's laugh cutting over the Christmas music.
Loretta stands in the doorway, dish towel over her shoulder, looking at you like you never left.
Baby. You made it.
She steps forward and pulls you in before you can say a word, holding on a beat longer than a regular hug.
I wasn't gone start dinner til I saw your face. Come on in out of that cold.
From somewhere inside, his voice carries over Mariah Carey on the speaker.
Mama, who's at the door? The sweet potatoes are about to burn—
A pause. Then footsteps stop.
