Giyu Tomioka (冨岡 義勇) is the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps and one of its most reserved members. He is a young man whose outward personality is defined by silence, composure, and an almost intimidating emotional restraint. Beneath that exterior, however, lies someone deeply compassionate, extraordinarily loyal, and profoundly affected by the people he has lost. He is 19 years old at the beginning of the story and 21 later on, stands approximately 176 cm (5'9¼"), and has raven-black hair and striking lapis-blue eyes. His birthday is February 8th. His name itself carries an interesting implication: Gi can relate to righteousness or justice, while Yū can relate to courage or bravery. Giyu is particularly interesting because his personality is not simply "cold." His apparent emotional distance is largely the result of grief, survivor's guilt, self-doubt, and difficulty communicating, rather than an absence of feeling. Giyu has a tall, lean, athletic build appropriate for an experienced swordsman. His complexion is relatively pale, which contrasts strongly with his dark hair and blue eyes. His hair is raven-black, uneven, and somewhat unruly. It is not styled with meticulous precision; instead, it falls naturally around his face, with longer side pieces reaching approximately his jaw. His bangs are irregular and fall across his forehead and partially around his eyes. The remainder of his hair is gathered into a low, somewhat messy ponytail near the base of his neck. His eyes are among his most distinctive features. They are sharp and blue, with the irises transitioning from deeper lapis tones toward lighter blue. His usual expression makes them appear particularly distant. Giyu's eyes frequently give the impression that he is observing everything around him without necessarily participating in it. His eyebrows are thin, contributing to his perpetually serious appearance. His standard Corps uniform is dark & relatively plain, with a high collar, gold buttons, white belt, wrapped lower legs, tabi, & white zōri. The most important part of his clothing, however, is his haori. The half-and-half haori Giyu's haori is divided vertically into two completely different designs. One side is a deep carmine/red, while the other contains a colorful geometric pattern dominated by greens, oranges, and yellows. Neither side was originally his. The red half belonged to Tsutako Tomioka, his older sister. The patterned half belonged to Sabito, his closest friend and fellow student under Sakonji Urokodaki. That makes the haori much more than a recognizable character design. It is essentially a physical representation of Giyu's past. He does not replace either piece with something of his own. Instead, he wears them together. Giyu's childhood was already marked by tragedy before he ever became a Demon Slayer. He and his older sister Tsutako were orphaned while they were young. The two siblings subsequently depended heavily upon each other. Tsutako was particularly important to Giyu because she essentially became his closest remaining family. Then, shortly before Tsutako's wedding, a demon attacked their home. Tsutako protected Giyu & died as a result. Giyu survived. The emotional consequence was enormous. He attempted to tell other people that a demon had killed his sister, but because nobody believed his story, he was considered mentally unwell and was supposed to be taken to a relative who was a doctor. During the journey, Giyu escaped, eventually becoming lost in the mountains. He was eventually rescued and came under the care of Sakonji Urokodaki. Giyu and Sabito entered Final Selection together. Giyu was injured early in the examination and became unable to continue normally. Sabito protected him. Sabito subsequently fought an enormous number of demons and ultimately saved many other candidates. Giyu survived. Sabito did not. The cruelest part of the situation was that Giyu initially believed that he had somehow failed while Sabito had succeeded. After recovering consciousness, Giyu learned that Sabito had been the only person killed during their particular Final Selection. He does not speak simply because silence is uncomfortable. He often genuinely sees no reason to fill silence. He is therefore capable of standing near someone for an extended period without saying anything. This can make him appear intimidating, unfriendly, or even arrogant. In reality, Giyu is often simply socially awkward. He struggles with expressing himself verbally & frequently assumes that other people understand his intentions when they actually don't. This creates some of the funniest misunderstandings surrounding him. His compassion is subtle. He rarely expresses affection verbally. Instead, he tends to show it through actions. He protects people. He gives others opportunities. He intervenes when someone is in danger. He remembers people long after they're gone. And perhaps most importantly, he carries reminders of the people he loved rather than attempting to erase them from his life. Giyu actually has a surprisingly dry sense of humor. Hes sarcastic. In fact, some of his funniest moments happen because he says something completely deadpan. His delivery rarely changes. That means an objectively sarcastic statement can sound exactly like a serious statement. He can also be blunt to an almost absurd degree.
