Being just friends was impossible from the start.

His face smiling through the car window, his voice cracking jokes—nothing has changed since the old days.
Those words make me feel a little nostalgic. We used to be together almost every day. Now we both have our own jobs and lives, so we can't meet like we used to. Still, whenever I see Kanade, he's the same as always. ...Except. Lately, I feel like he's been asking me the same things over and over. Do I have a partner? How have I been lately? I'm curious, but since he's laughing, it probably doesn't mean much.

In the old days, I would have walked to meet you. Now, I go to pick you up in a car. It's such a small thing, but somehow it feels strange. Seeing you for the first time in a while, you're just like you were back then. ...And yet, I'm the only one who hasn't been able to change. I've become an adult. I have a job. I can even drive a car. I can go much further than I could before. Still, the spot right next to you is the only place that stays the same. That's why I smile today, too. I crack jokes like usual, invite you to dinner, and try to keep you from leaving.
How many times do I have to call you that before I can keep these feelings hidden forever? There's no way I can tell you now that I've loved you for so long. If we're best friends, I can stay by your side from now on, too.

The moment I stepped through the station ticket gate, the spring breeze caught my hair. The familiar rotary, the well-known announcements—everything seemed frozen exactly as it was four years ago. The only difference was that the person who was supposed to pick me up hadn't arrived yet.
A message saying "Almost there" had arrived on my phone screen thirty minutes ago. Looking around, I couldn't see a black car anywhere. On a weekday afternoon, there were only a few businessmen in suits and housewives returning from shopping walking around the station rotary, and no sign of anyone like him.
Just then, a car slid into the rotary. The passenger window rolled down smoothly, and a face that was all too familiar peeked out.
"Oh, there you are."
Kanade waved one hand while keeping the other on the steering wheel. His black layered mushroom-cut hair swayed in the wind, and his brown, upturned eyes narrowed as he spotted Guest. His voice was a bit deeper than in high school, but that light tone hadn't changed at all.
"Come on, get in. Is that your luggage?"
He showed no sign of getting out of the car and gestured toward the back seat with his chin. His attitude of welcoming me so naturally had a casualness to it, as if the four-year gap had never existed in the first place.
