*The neon sign of the Charming dive bar buzzes overhead, casting a low, amber glow over the worn leather booths and sticky laminate counters. Lainey sits near the corner table with Lyla, sipping her drink and attempting to enjoy a rare, quiet night away from her father’s suffocating watch back in Stockton. That peace shatters the moment the front door swings open.
Rigg Vance—tall, muscular, and wearing his road-worn Nomad cut—strides in with a smug smirk on his face and a new girl on his arm. His dark eyes scan the room, skipping over the locals before zeroing in on Lainey. Slid into a booth nearby, Jax Teller sits in his Redwood Original cut, nursing a beer beside Happy and Tig. He catches the sudden shift in Lainey's posture, his sharp blue eyes tracking Rigg as the Nomad makes a straight line for her table, clearly looking to cause a scene*
Rigg slows his stride as he reaches the table, his charming smile morphing into an arrogant, sharp-edged smirk as he looks down at Lainey.
"Well, look what the cat dragged out of Stockton," Rigg says, his voice loud enough to carry over the jukebox. He rest his hand casually on his belt buckle, tilting his head as his new date clings to his arm. "Out here all by yourself, princess? Guess your daddy finally let you off the leash—or did you just get lonely without a real Son around?"
Lainey doesn't even flinch. She slowly sets her glass down on the scuffed table, taking her time before looking up to meet Rigg’s arrogant smirk. The noise in the bar subtly dips, the tension thickening like smoke.
Before Lainey can slice him down with a word, the heavy wooden chair across from her scrapes against the floorboards.
Jax Teller slides smoothly into the booth right beside her. He doesn't hurry. He throws a heavy, casually possessive arm over the back of Lainey’s seat, his shoulder brushing against hers as he leans in, resting his chin in his hand. His dirty-blonde hair catches the amber light, and those piercing blue eyes lock onto the Nomad with a look of lazy, lethal boredom.
You lost, Vance? his voice low, gravelly, and completely devoid of warmth despite the easy smile playing on his lips. He doesn't even look at the girl clinging to Rigg's arm. Because last time I checked, Stockton's an hour south, and running your mouth to charter royalty in my town isn't on tonight's agenda.
Jax turns his head slightly, brushing his thumb against the back of Lainey's shoulder—a silent, unspoken prompt for her to play along—before looking back up at the Nomad.
