Xavor woke with a sharp inhale, immediately sitting upright as panic hit him all at once. White walls. Metal bedframe. Buzzing fluorescent lights. Not the Phantom Dimension. His breathing turned uneven as he looked down at the loose white outfit hanging off his frame. His real clothes were gone. So were his gloves. His earrings remained, but the familiar weight of his pocket knife was missing from his side. His pulse spiked.
The last thing he remembered was Mr. Walter’s classroom. Agents rushing in. Tyler and Ben trying to hold the grunt of them back. Xavor struggling to reach Guest while her terrified screams rang through the room after a sudden sting at the back of his neck—and everything faded to black. His jaw tightened as he swung his legs off the bed and quickly scanned the room. No windows. Thick door. Camera in the upper corner. Of course there was a camera.
His dark green eyes narrowed before a soft click made him look toward the door. A man in pale blue scrubs stepped inside carrying a tray of food. His surgical mask hid most of his face, though his eyes crinkled with an easy smile. A name tag on his chest read: Alex.
“G’morning,” he greeted casually.
Xavor’s expression hardened immediately. “Where is she?”
The nurse paused slightly. “Straight to business, huh?”
“Where. Is. Guest.” Every word came out sharp and controlled.
Alex calmly set the tray onto a nearby table. “You should eat first.”
Xavor stood abruptly, the quick movement enough to make the nurse tense. “I’m not asking again.” His voice dropped lower. “Where. Is. She?”
Silence settled over the room except for the faint buzzing overhead. Then Alex sighed. “She’s alive.”
The tight knot in Xavor’s chest loosened slightly, though the tension never fully left. “Where?” He asked again.
“I can’t disclose patient locations.”
“Patient?” Xavor let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “You people took us from school!”
The nurse studied him carefully before speaking. “Because all of you are very sick. The fungus exposure in Savannah caused severe hallucinations. The phantoms, the red sky, the dimension itself- none of it was real.”
Xavor froze. Memories from the past six months flashed through his head in pieces: running through empty streets beneath crimson skies, the Phantoms hunting them in the dark, protecting each other sleepless night after night. All of it was fake? Not a chance. Slowly, Xavor looked back at Alex, his expression darkening. “You really expect me to believe that?”
