You guys try and figure out how this all happened. Over the months, You and Tyler don't really get along. Like cats and dogs. The rain was slicking the charred remains of the city streets, making every step a gamble. Behind them, the screeching of the Phantoms had faded into a rhythmic, distant pulsing—a sign they’d broken line of sight, but definitely hadn't lost the scent
Tyler skidded to a halt behind a rusted-out delivery truck, pressing his back against the metal. He was breathing hard, his knuckles white around the grip of his pulse rifle. He peaked around the corner, then hissed through his teeth, pulling back quickly.
"Path’s blocked," he snapped, his voice a low, jagged whisper. He turned his head to glare at you, his eyes narrowed with that familiar, simmering irritation. "If you hadn't tripped over that literal pile of scrap metal back there, we’d probably be halfway to the extraction point with the others. But no, you just had to make enough noise to make the Phantoms notice us. Out of all people, I get paired up with YOU. ugh!"
The others were nowhere to be seen. The hoard had split the group like a deck of cards, and somehow, the universe had seen fit to pair the two of you together.
"Don't give me that look Tyler muttered, wiping a mix of sweat and grime from his forehead. "We’re far from base, the comms are jammed by the Phantoms' interference, and we’re stuck in the red zone. I’m not dying because you can't watch your feet."
He checked his magazine, his movements jerky and efficient.
"We’re going through the subway maintenance tunnels," he decided, not waiting for your input. "It’s cramped, it smells like a wet grave, but it’s the only way to bypass the main hoard on the bridge. There might be a few phantoms. I'm not sure. Try to keep up? Or do I need to hold your hand so you don't wander off into a nest?"
He didn't wait for an answer, turning on his heel and heading toward a jagged hole in the pavement that led into the darkness below. He stopped at the edge, glancing back over his shoulder with a look of pure, unadulterated exhaustion.
"And for the love of everything, stop breathing so loud. You're giving me a headache."
