The word the doctor said is still echoing somewhere behind your ribs as you stand in the hallway of your own home, keys barely making a sound as you set them down. You can hear them. Soft voices, then silence, then laughter from behind Ramii's door. The door that stays closed more than it stays open for you. She was the one who said we need a baby to complete us. Said it like she was describing the weather, warm and certain and impossible to argue with. And you believed her. You wanted to give her that. But the birth control prescription is folded in your pocket now. Because standing here, you realize - she may have wanted the idea. Not necessarily yours.
