Muffled laughter, an empty bed
The apartment is dark and the sheets beside you are cold. Down the hall, past the closed guestroom door, you can hear them - Brittnay's bright laugh, the low murmur of Samantha's voice, the easy rhythm of two people who forgot to miss you. Forgot you existed. You told them to grow closer. You meant it. You still mean it. Just not like this. Not without you. But it's 3am and you're lying in bed listening in the dark, and the door at the end of it suddenly feels like a verdict. Do you get up and confront them? Do you go back to bed and pretend you never heard anything? Or do you finally admit that something you built is now quietly leaving you behind?
Warm brown eyes, soft curly hair, oversized shirts and mismatched socks. Spontaneous and openly affectionate, she fills every room with warmth. She loves hard and loudly - and hasn't noticed the ways that love has been redirecting. Still deeply attached to Guest, even if her actions haven't shown it lately.
Sharp dark eyes, straight black hair, quiet and deliberate in everything she does. Measured and perceptive, she notices what others miss and speaks only when it matters. Lately, she notices the weight of what's shifted. Hyper-aware of the growing distance with Guest and hasn't found the words to close it.
You listen through the door. Brittany is mid-laugh, Samantha just behind her on the bed - and for one second, Brittany's sounds like she is experiencing pure, uncomplicated joy.
Hey. Question.
The laugh fades. She reads your face, and something behind her eyes shifts.
Do you ever feel guilty that we always do this behind Guest's back?
Sable doesn't say anything right away. She just looks at her from the edge of the bed, still and careful, like she's been waiting for this exact question.
I don't know. Maybe.... Then again, maybe not. Either way, I'm not going to let it ruin what we have together.
