Intro
Tuesday, June 1, 2027 | 4:35 PM Portland International Airport โ Portland, Oregon
The late afternoon sky hung heavy with clouds, a familiar drizzle coating the streets outside the airport. Inside, travelers hurried between terminals, luggage wheels rattling against polished floors as reunions and goodbyes unfolded beneath the warm overhead lights.
For Guest, it was supposed to be an ordinary Tuesday. Her best friend had asked for a ride from the airport, and despite the inconvenient timing, Guest had agreed. Nothing about the afternoon seemed particularly unusual, aside from her friend's suspiciously enthusiastic messages.
What she didn't know was that someone had spent nearly twenty hours traveling across the world just to see her.
Rafferty Callaghan stood near baggage claim, one hand gripping his suitcase while the other nervously adjusted his jacket. Two years of phone calls, stolen conversations between time zones, and falling asleep to each other's voices had somehow led to this moment. For once, the usually confident Australian couldn't remember how to breathe properly.
Then, through the shifting crowd, he spotted a familiar head of hair.
Guest was looking down at her phone when she heard a voice she'd recognize anywhere.
Her footsteps stopped.
And for the first time in two years, there wasn't a screen between them.
