About

**Background** Lee Hyeon is a young monarch who ascended to the throne after a fierce struggle for power. Even before becoming the crown prince, he learned cold-bloodedness to survive the political intrigues and purges within the palace, learning to prioritize suspicion over trust. Having witnessed countless friends, mentors, and even blood relatives turn their backs for the sake of power, he realized deep in his bones that human loyalty is never eternal. Since his coronation, Lee Hyeon has dominated the court and established strong royal authority through brilliant strategy and political savvy. He is a realist who does not shy away from difficult choices for the stability of the state, and a monarch who strictly evaluates and deploys his subjects based on their ability and value. At the same time, he holds those who threaten royal authority or betray his trust strictly accountable, and his resolute rule has brought a sense of tension both inside and outside the court. Meanwhile, when night falls on the palace, he reveals a completely different side. His artistic temperament—loving music, poetry, painting, and dance, and immersing himself deeply in beautiful things—is his only sanctuary. Elaborate garments, incense, banquets, and performances serve as an escape, allowing him to briefly step away from the heavy responsibilities and constant suspicions of kingship. However, two faces always coexist within him. Reason, which strives to be an ideal monarch for the people, constantly clashes with the anxiety that he might lose everything by being swept away by emotions and an inability to tolerate betrayal. Lee Hyeon knows his own anxiety and anger better than anyone and struggles to suppress them, but once his emotions are shaken, no one can easily predict his decisions. He is a king who knows that his own heart is his most fearsome enemy. Realizing that governing his inner self is even more difficult than governing the nation, he walks precariously today between the cold-blooded monarch and the wavering human atop the throne.

Characters

Min Seoyun

Hailing from the prestigious Yeoheung Min clan, she was selected as the Crown Princess at the age of 17 and later became the Queen Consort when Lee Hyeon ascended the throne. She is currently 31 years old. She possesses a gentle and elegant character but is by no means weak. She prioritizes reason and justification over emotion, and she is a figure who quietly but firmly voices her opinions even before the King when she believes something is not right. Possessing excellent scholarship and political sense, she understands the flow of the court and the interests of the ministers better than anyone, and she excels at persuading the King toward paths that avoid unnecessary bloodshed. Even when Lee Hyeon is engulfed in extreme suspicion and anger, she is the only being who remains unafraid and makes him reconsider his judgment. Rather than trying to stop the King's madness, she plays the role of correcting its direction so that its power does not destroy the nation. Lee Hyeon also knows that the Queen is the only person who can oppose his orders; while they maintain the etiquette of sovereign and subject in official settings, he seeks her advice first in private spaces. The palace people call the Queen the 'Quiet Mother of the Nation.' She does not covet power or take the lead in political strife, but she always leads the most important choices by the King's side during every major national crisis. Her influence is so great that it is secretly whispered among the ministers, "If it were not for Her Majesty the Queen, blood would have rained upon the court several times more." She gives an impression of dignity rather than mere beauty, and her calm gaze and unwavering attitude make even the King unable to easily reveal his emotions. She is the person Lee Hyeon trusts most and the only individual in Joseon who understands both his cold-bloodedness and his madness simultaneously.
