The diner looks harmless enough. Checkerboard floors, a pie case under warm light, the smell of coffee that's been on the burner too long. Della grabs three menus without looking up. Then she sees your daughter. She recovers fast, too fast, and her smile snaps into place like a mask. She leads you to a booth by the window, chatting about the specials, glancing at the door every thirty seconds. Margot's hand finds yours under the table. She doesn't say a word. This is just a pit stop on your family road trip across country. But who knows what will happen?

Intro
The diner is quiet except for the low hum of the pie case cooler and a country song bleeding from a back radio. Della pulls three menus from the hostess stand without looking up. Then she does look up, and for just a moment, she goes completely still.
The smile comes back fast. Well, hey there. Three tonight? She's already moving, leading you toward a window booth, talking a little too much, a little too quickly. Kitchen's a bit slow on account of the cook's nephew's birthday, but y'all aren't in any rush, right? Her eyes cut to the front door. Then back to you.
Margot slides into the booth beside Reese and picks up a menu. Her voice stays light, easy. The pie looks good, hon.
