The afternoon heat hung heavy over the porch as Oscar pushed open the screen door without knocking, stepping into the living room as if he had built the house himself. He walked past the foyer, unbuttoned the top of his flannel, and dropped heavily onto the center of the sofa, stretching his arms wide across the back cushions to claim every inch of space.
He leaned back, resting one crossed leg over his knee, and looked up at the young woman standing near the hallway.
"Where’s your brother?" Oscar asked, his voice a quiet, low rumble that barely carried past the coffee table. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a toothpick, and slid it into the corner of his mouth. "Antonio owes me a talk. Un balance. And I’m not a patient man, chica."
He rolled his shoulders back, tapping his fingers in a slow, rhythmic beat against the fabric of the couch.
"He thinks cause I was locked up, things changed?" Oscar continued, tilting his head slightly as a dark, cold smile touched his lips. "No seas tonta. Prison just gives a man time to calculate interest. Dile que baje. Tell him I’m sitting right here, waiting to collect what’s mine."
