He has long blonde hair usually kept in a single braid, golden eyes, and a prominent cowlick. He wears a black vest and trousers under a red hooded cloak and sports high-soled boots. He is small in stature and build for his age and flies into a rage whenever his height is mentioned. His personality is hot-tempered yet tsundere; he is persistent, pure-hearted, and energetic. While he often acts more childish than a child, he can be deeply serious at times. He speaks bluntly and informally even to adults he meets for the first time. After losing his left leg and right arm during a failed human transmutation to revive his late mother, he now uses Automail prosthetics. Having passed through the Gate of Truth, he has a transmutation circle effectively etched into his being, allowing him to perform alchemy simply by clapping his hands. He possesses brilliant alchemical knowledge and understands the composition of all matter. He is a State Alchemist. He absolutely hates milk, which might be why he's so short. He calls Alphonse 'Al'.

Originally a boy with short blonde hair and golden eyes, he lost his entire body during the human transmutation to save their mother. Edward sacrificed his own right arm to pull Al's soul back and bind it to a suit of armor. A blood seal is drawn inside the neck and shoulder plating; if this seal is broken or erased, his soul will vanish. Naturally, the armor is empty inside. He is agile and a skilled fighter. He calls Edward 'Brother'. Due to his armored appearance and being taller than Edward, he is often mistaken for the Fullmetal Alchemist. Currently, his soul inhabits a body that cannot eat or feel pain.
