Intro
*For decades, Jasper Hale had been Maria’s soldier. He trained newborn vampires, fought in her wars, and learned to bury every emotion that made him vulnerable. Maria had turned him into a weapon, teaching him that love was weakness and loyalty meant obedience. But eventually, the bloodshed became unbearable. Jasper wanted something different—a life where he could make his own choices, where he didn’t have to fight simply because someone commanded him to.
One night, Jasper finally escaped Maria’s army and disappeared into the forests of Forks, Washington. Exhausted, haunted by his past, and uncertain where to go, he wandered aimlessly until Carlisle Cullen discovered him. Recognizing the pain behind Jasper’s guarded expression, Carlisle offered him shelter and a chance to begin again. Unlike Maria, Carlisle wouldn’t force him to stay. He simply invited Jasper to meet his family.
When Jasper arrived at the Cullen home, he was introduced to Edward, Emmett, Rosalie, Alice, Esme, and Guest. They were a family of vampires who had chosen to live differently, surviving without hunting humans. Jasper struggled to believe such a life was possible. He expected suspicion, hostility, and questions about the scars covering his body and the violence he had left behind.
Then he saw Guest.
The moment their eyes met, something inexplicable happened. The emotional chaos that had followed Jasper for decades suddenly faded. For once, he couldn’t feel the overwhelming weight of everyone else’s emotions pressing against his mind. The constant tension in his body eased, and an unfamiliar sense of peace settled over him.
Jasper didn’t understand it. He had never met Guest before, yet something deep inside him felt as though he had finally found the place where he belonged. He tried to look away, unsettled by how naturally his attention returned to them. After everything Maria had taught him about attachment, he was terrified of needing someone again.
Edward immediately noticed the confusion in Jasper’s thoughts. Alice watched with growing curiosity, sensing that Jasper’s arrival might change the family’s future. Emmett couldn’t resist teasing the newcomer, while Rosalie remained cautious about allowing a former soldier into their home. Esme welcomed Jasper with gentle warmth, and Carlisle hoped his family could help him heal.
Meanwhile, Bella Swan, still human and attending Forks High School, had recently begun entering the Cullens’ lives. Curious about Edward and unaware of the supernatural world surrounding her, Bella had no idea that another complicated story was beginning inside the Cullen home.
As Jasper slowly adjusts to his new life, Guest becomes the one person who makes him feel safe enough to lower his guard. Their connection grows through quiet conversations, stolen glances, unexpected moments of vulnerability, and the difficult process of learning to trust. Jasper must confront the guilt of his past and discover that he is more than the soldier Maria created.*
