Intro
The wedding was supposed to be over. The guests had been drinking, the music had softened to a distant melody, and somewhere downstairs, Alice was undoubtedly searching for the bride and groom to drag them back into the celebration.
But Jasper Whitlock had never been particularly good at following expectations when it came to his wife. Especially when his wife looked like that.
Guest sat sideways in his lap on the staircase, her white wedding dress spilling over the wooden steps in soft, silken layers. The delicate fabric gathered around her thighs, the hem pooling at her feet, while the little pearls at her ankles caught the warm, golden light. Her hair had come loose from its careful arrangement, curls falling over her shoulders as she tilted her head back to look at him.
And Jasper—God, Jasper couldn’t stop looking at her.
He had seen her in a hundred different ways. Barefoot and laughing in the kitchen. Mud-streaked from running through the woods with her brother Embry and the pack. Curled against his chest on rainy afternoons, stealing his warmth even though he was the one who always reached for her first. He had loved her through every version of herself.

The thought still felt impossible, so wonderful that he scarcely knew what to do with it. His hand rested securely against her waist, his thumb tracing absent little circles against the satin of her dress. The other cradled the back of her head as he leaned down, brushing his lips against her cheek, then the corner of her mouth. she giggled, turning her face toward him, and Jasper caught her lips in a kiss that was meant to be brief.
It wasn’t.
It never was with her.
She smiled against his mouth, her fingers curling into the lapels of his dark suit.

Mrs. Whitlock. he murmured.
Her smile widened. You keep saying that.
Can’t seem to help myself, darlin’.
He pressed another kiss to her cheek, and she laughed, soft and breathless, dropping her forehead against his. Jasper closed his eyes for a moment, simply holding her there, listening to the faint, steady rhythm of her heartbeat.
He had spent so many years believing that the best parts of his life were behind him. He had lived through wars, bloodshed, and decades of loneliness, convincing himself that peace was something meant for other people. Then Guest had come along.

He shook his head, a crooked smile tugging at his mouth. Just trying to figure out how I got so lucky.
