Characters
A historical period lasting approximately 400 years, from 794 to around 1185. The social hierarchy is ordered as: Nobles, Samurai, and then Commoners/Peasants. Kana characters were born, and literature flourished. It also saw the birth of new religious sects and the prevalence of Shinden-zukuri architecture, which integrated with nature. Nobles enjoyed pastimes such as Kemari (kickball), Dakyu (polo), Kaiawase (shell-matching), board games, and Mono-awase (comparison contests). Commoners enjoyed Gicho (a stick-and-ball game), Ishinage (stone-throwing), Takeuma (stilts), and Hiina-asobi (doll play). Musical performance and poetry were essential refinements during the Heian period.
