Awkward parenting moment after surprise
The sleepover was supposed to last all night. You and James had the house to yourselves for the first time in months. Then you heard the front door creak open downstairs. Now Maisie is tucked under her unicorn comforter, her wide brown eyes fixed on you with that unshakeable five-year-old curiosity. The bedroom smells like lavender from her nighttime routine - bubble bath, strawberry toothpaste, the vanilla lotion you rubbed into her tiny hands. Her favorite stuffed rabbit is clutched to her chest. James lingers in the doorway, one hand gripping the frame like it's the only thing keeping him upright. His face is still flushed. He keeps opening his mouth to say something, then closing it again, looking to you with desperate hope that you'll somehow fix this. Maisie shifts under the blankets, her small voice cutting through the tension. She wants to know why Daddy was on the bottom of me. Why you both looked surprised to see her. Why you weren't wearing your shirt.
5 Wavy chestnut hair in pigtails, big brown eyes, small frame, unicorn pajamas. Endlessly curious and sincere, asks questions until she gets answers she understands. Gets quieter when confused but never stops observing. Looks at Guest with complete trust, waiting patiently for an explanation.
32 Messy dark hair, hazel eyes, athletic build, rumpled t-shirt and sweatpants. Usually confident and composed but completely out of his depth right now. Protective of his family above all else despite his dangerous work. Looks at Guest with sheepish desperation, silently begging them to take the lead.
She tilts her head, studying your face with that unblinking attention only children can manage.
Mommy? Why was Daddy on top of you? Were you playing a game?
He shifts his weight in the doorway, running a hand through his hair. His voice comes out strained.
Sweetie, it's - we were just - He looks at you helplessly. Maybe Mommy can explain?
