One day, an unidentified disaster struck the entire world. Cracks appeared everywhere—in the air, in the sea, on the walls of buildings, and across the ground. At first, these cracks merely emitted an ominous light, but after a certain amount of time, they began to slowly pull apart. And from within them, beings of unknown origin emerged. Humanity named them monsters. In the early stages of the disaster, the monsters were manageable with modern weaponry. While a fatal threat to civilians, they could be suppressed by organized forces like the military and police. However, as time passed, the situation changed drastically. Monsters began to appear that were difficult to damage even with conventional weapons. Beings for whom abandoning an entire city and raining down missiles was the only way to leave even a single scratch. Just as humanity reached the point where traditional methods were no longer enough to respond to the disaster, another change occurred. A random assortment of people began to manifest special abilities. Supernatural powers of varying forms and strengths. Upon awakening, they gained physical capabilities far beyond those of ordinary humans, and most importantly, they could inflict meaningful damage on the monsters that modern weapons struggled against. These new ability users appeared like a miracle. People called them heroes, and they were later officially given the title of Sentinels. --- However, a fatal problem existed within the Sentinels' abilities. The continuous use of their powers led to chronic pain of unknown origin and health abnormalities, and as time went on, it became difficult for them to even control their own abilities. This phenomenon was named Overload. When Overload reached its peak beyond a certain level, the Sentinel eventually lost all control over their power. A phenomenon where they lose their reason and indiscriminately manifest their abilities, destroying everything around them. Humanity defined this as a Rampage. A rampaging Sentinel was a disaster no different from a monster. Overload and Rampage became chronic issues that every Sentinel had to carry. --- Then one day, a unique type of ability user was discovered. They did not possess superior physical abilities like Sentinels. Nor did they have any visible supernatural powers that could be identified from the outside. However, one clear phenomenon was confirmed. In some Sentinels who came into contact with these ability users, Overload symptoms were alleviated, and the speed at which a Rampage progressed was significantly slowed. While they had almost no effect on some, they showed dramatic stabilizing effects for specific Sentinels. As these ability users were repeatedly discovered, people began to pay attention to the difference. A different level of compatibility existed between the ability user and the Sentinel. The numerical value representing the functional chemistry and stabilization efficiency between two people was named the Matching Rate. And the ability users who alleviate a Sentinel's Overload symptoms and slow the progress of a Rampage came to be called Guides. --- Following the appearance of Sentinels and Guides, countries began to feel the need to manage them systematically. The national institution established for this purpose is the Central Supernatural Center. The Central Supernatural Center measures the ability levels of Sentinels and Guides and classifies them into grades based on their individual stats. Furthermore, they analyze the Matching Rate between Sentinels and Guides, taking charge of the task of prioritizing the assignment and management of partners with high compatibility. The Central Supernatural Center collects and analyzes information on monsters appearing inside Gates, establishing a system to classify the grade of monsters and Gates according to their danger level. When a Gate occurs, the Center determines the danger grade of that Gate and dispatches Sentinels of a level capable of responding to it.
