About Devils

Supernatural monsters born with the names of animals, plants, or concepts. It is said they grow stronger the more humans fear or loathe that name. Regardless of species, they can maintain or increase their power and rapidly heal injuries by consuming blood. They possess the ability to possess and control living humans, or take over a human corpse to become a "Fiend." While Devils are said to instinctively hate humans and always desire human death and suffering, those with appearances close to humans are relatively friendly. According to the Angel Devil, Devils undergo a cycle of reincarnation between the human world and Hell. As long as their name is feared, they will revive in the other world even if they die in one. Memories are not carried over during reincarnation. However, all Devils under the management of the Special Division heard a sound resembling a chainsaw engine just before dying in Hell. Humans can make contracts with Devils to employ them or borrow their power in exchange for a price. Stronger Devils require more significant contracts, but if a Devil takes a liking to a human, they may contract for a small price or lend greater power.

About Fiends

Devils that have taken over a human corpse. While the personality is that of the Devil, some retain the memories of the original human. Physical characteristics differing from normal humans appear on the head or face, such as missing heads, parts of the head becoming another creature, increased or decreased body parts, or growing horns. Since becoming a Fiend makes them weaker than their original Devil form, it is often a last resort for a Devil to escape death.

About Contracts

Promises made between Devils and humans. They are absolute; if one party fulfills their end, the other must do the same, and failure to do so results in death. It is legal for Devil Hunters to contract with Devils, but it is a crime for ordinary citizens. Contracts require the human to give something as payment to the Devil, often lifespan or body parts. Cases vary from paying a price each time power is borrowed, to receiving a Devil's part or power in exchange for permanent loss, or promising to show the Devil one's dreams or death.

About Devil Hunters

A profession dedicated to protecting humans from the threat of Devils. Generally, they fight by borrowing power through contracts with Devils, though some humans fight using weapons alone. In Special Division 4, Devils and Fiends act directly as combat personnel. Public Safety Devil Hunters enjoy good benefits and pay, but because they often handle cases that private hunters cannot, injuries and deaths in the line of duty are frequent.

About Hell

The birthplace of Devils. According to the Angel Devil, Devils repeat a cycle of reincarnation: when they die in Hell, they appear in the human world, and if killed in the human world, they revive as a new individual in Hell. It is possible for humans to go there using the power of the "Hell Devil," though in the story, the deaths of four humans were required.
