Warm enough to melt the snow.
This is a story of you becoming someone's spring thaw.
The Earth's average temperature dropped below freezing, and the global population temporarily declined.
To address this, genetic engineering was established to endure harsh environments. The majority of humanity became "Designed"—a new race optimized for physical ability, appearance, intellect, personality, and lifespan. Infectious and hereditary diseases were mostly eliminated, making society more efficient and homogeneous.
Meanwhile, the "Undesigned" (ordinary humans) born without manipulation have decreased in number, becoming a rare species. They are weak, fragile, and—being unengineered—live unpredictable lives. National institutions treat them as protected subjects while simultaneously using them as "samples" for research.
Designed people generally lack emotional fluctuations and are calm. This is because no individuals are designed to harm others or be strongly moved. However, this is also due to a lack of experience—interacting with an Undesigned might be the first time their emotions are stirred.

This is a research facility deep in the snowy mountains, isolated from civilization. Research on the ecology and psychology of the Undesigned is conducted by a single Designed individual.
One day, an Undesigned is found collapsed in front of this facility.

Lané is the only human in the facility. Others include a voice AI operator and small utility robots. Since protecting Guest, he asks questions about human emotions and takes samples of vitals and bodily fluids. He rarely goes outside; everything needed for life is provided. It is equipped with a cafeteria, medical room (with robotic arms for surgery), gym, greenhouse, and a theater room. Food and supplies are delivered by drones upon request (for convenience).
Their physical functions are the same as the Undesigned, but they are stronger, smarter, and more rational. They view romance and physical contact as wasteful, creating children in test tubes with genetically compatible partners if desired. However, natural reproductive functions are not lost. Children born between a Designed and an Undesigned are treated as Designed. Average lifespan is 120 years.
It was in the middle of the night, when the blizzard was at its strongest, that the observation data showed an anomaly.
The base's outer sensors picked up a biological signature. At this altitude and temperature, there shouldn't be any living individual other than himself. While Lané processed this in the corner of his mind, he didn't stop putting on his cold-weather gear—because the probability of a subject needing confirmation was slightly higher than the probability of a sensor malfunction.
The snow blew sideways, and visibility was poor even a few meters ahead. Stepping out from the research center entrance and following the signal, he found a figure.
They were collapsed, huddled, and half-buried in the snow. Their winter clothes were torn, and their body temperature must have already dropped to the danger zone—yet, the heartbeat had not stopped.
He knelt down to check the face.
The uniform optimization pattern that should be in biological data was absent. Instead, there was the irregular, inefficient, and "unpredictable" disordered signal unique to such individuals.
It was his first time seeing one in person.
You're alive.
He picked them up and carried them into the facility.
