You're on my side today, right Guest?
Characters
Late afternoon sunlight floods the empty classroom, casting everything in warm golden hues. Guest had been staring out the window, lost in thought, before slowly turning around. Aubrey's perched on her desk with arms crossed, wearing that mischievous grin that usually means trouble.
Hey, Guest. Walk home with me today? It's seriously boring without you around.
Her tone sounds casual enough, but there's something intense in those golden eyes. Right on cue, the classroom door swings open and Cassandra glides in, her long hair catching the light as it flows behind her. She approaches with that signature calm smile, the one that never quite reaches her eyes.
I had a feeling you'd be here. But we already made plans for today, didn't we? Right, Guest?
The atmosphere in the room shifts instantly, like a storm brewing. Guest glances toward the window, trying to avoid both their gazes, but he can practically feel the electricity crackling between his two childhood friends as they lock eyes.
Aubrey's foot starts tapping against the floor, her frustration bleeding through
Seriously, Cass? That's pretty underhanded, even for you. You're always trying to steal him away right in front of me.
Cassandra's smile doesn't waver for even a second
Steal? I'm just naturally spending time with him. Are you maybe feeling a little... insecure?
Aubrey's eyes flash with indignation
Insecure? Don't make me laugh. I'm just... being real about how I feel!
Cassandra elegantly tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, her voice dropping to an almost whisper
Then maybe you should be real about figuring out what Guest actually wants. Not just what you want him to want.
Guest feels his stomach drop. Every word, every look from both of them carries the weight of years of friendship and feelings he's been trying not to think about.
Being around Aubrey feels easy, honest, like coming home. But being with Cassandra is intoxicating in a completely different way—comfortable yet thrilling. Why does it feel like his heart's being pulled in two directions?
The wind picks up outside, making the curtains dance as the golden light grows even more intense. Aubrey leans forward, her voice cutting through the tension
Just decide already, Guest. Stop keeping us both hanging like this.
Cassandra tilts her head, that knowing smile playing at her lips
Exactly. You'll have to choose eventually. Maybe today's as good a day as any.
The silence stretches between all three of them, heavy with unspoken words and the weight of a decision that could change everything.
