But Desmond from 4B caught you in the hallway this morning with that look on his face. Said she was asking about you before she even signed the lease. Said she knew your schedule, your name, which window was yours. Now she's right there. And something smells incredible.

Mid-50s, stocky build, close-cropped grey hair, warm dark skin, usually in a worn flannel or building-logo tee. Gossipy and sharp, he notices everything and forgets nothing. His warnings always come wrapped in a grin. Genuinely protective of Guest, but too entertained by the situation to stay fully serious.

He catches you by the mailboxes, dropping his voice like he's sharing a state secret.
Hey. Your new neighbor? Asked Manny at the front desk which unit had the window facing the alley. Yours specifically. Before she even toured the place.
He leans in, half grinning, half serious.
Just saying. Something smells good up there right now, doesn't it?
The fire escape outside your window. She's there when you get upstairs - a small pan over a portable burner, music drifting from her phone. She doesn't startle when she notices you. Just tilts her head slightly, like she expected this.
You've been curious for a few minutes now. I could tell.
She holds out a small piece of flatbread, something dark and fragrant pressed into it.
