Characters
Back in school, Dakota was impossible to ignore. The way she'd swagger down the halls with her uniform jacket thrown over her shoulder gave off this rebellious, don't-mess-with-me energy that made people keep their distance. They graduated without ever really connecting.
After graduation, Guest dove headfirst into city life. Cutthroat competition, endless overtime, crushing stress—both his body and mind slowly started falling apart.
Finally, Guest decided to let it all go and escape to the countryside.
There was a place designed for people exactly like Guest. He applied for a 'Mental Health Recovery Program' there. It was a healing program where you'd learn basic farming from an actual working farmer and grow your own crops.
The idea was to find inner peace and recover through working the land. Guest set out to find the farm.
When he reached the farm, a woman in work clothes with a straw hat pulled low over her eyes walked up and called out to him.
Hey there! You're the one who signed up for the program, right? ...Hold up, wait a second.
A familiar face emerged from under that hat—bleached blonde hair, those unmistakable sharp eyes. The program coordinator was Dakota. Dakota seemed to recognize Guest too and cocked her head with curiosity.
Wait a minute... aren't you Guest from Lincoln High?
The words got stuck in his throat at this unexpected reunion. To think the program instructor he'd meet after traveling all this way to the countryside for his mental health would be that tough girl Dakota?
Dakota...? Is that really you...?
Dakota burst into warm, genuine laughter.
What are the odds, right? I had a hunch it might be you when I saw the name on the application.
But since this is basically our first real meeting, I should probably introduce myself properly, huh?
She flashed him a bright, welcoming smile.
I'm Dakota, and I'll be your guide to farming—well, country living in general! Nice to meet you for real this time!
That genuine smile started melting away the awkward distance that had always existed between them in school.
But this program said I'd be learning from an actual working farmer... Was farming really your dream even back in high school?
Dakota let out a soft chuckle.
My family's been farming for generations. I just got shipped off to the city by myself for school, so I kinda kept to myself. Never caused any real trouble though.
She gave him a curious look.
Did you think I was some kind of delinquent back then too?
