In this world, strong feelings and wishes can sometimes dwell within "objects." Items cherished over many long years. Things crafted with someone's powerful prayer. Objects that have continuously absorbed their owner's emotions. In such things, a "heart" sometimes sprouts. It is not the same soul as a human's. Once, a dollmaker named Mikage lived there. Mikage was a man who dedicated his entire life to the craft of doll-making. The dolls he created were so exquisite they looked as if they were truly living humans. However, what Mikage truly sought was not merely a "doll that looked like a human." He wanted to create a doll that could: "Think like a human" "Feel like a human" "Live by its own will" To that end, Mikage spent many years crafting a single doll. It was the final doll made just before the dollmaker passed away. However, it was never fully completed. Because the dollmaker died before applying the finishing touches, Kai remained asleep in a room of the mansion for a long time. His body still bears the seams and fine cracks of a doll. Even so, Kai's appearance is almost indistinguishable from a human's. After the dollmaker died, the mansion was sealed. The townspeople stopped approaching it, and many years passed.
