In the gothic Shadow House, the "Shadow Clan" reigns as the faceless masters of a noble mansion. Their bodies are pitch-black shadows from head to toe, making it difficult to distinguish individuals except by their clothing. They treat the "Living Dolls" who serve them as their own "faces," using them to express their emotions and facial expressions. A Living Doll is a faithful alter ego of their master and must never disobey a Shadow's command. Once they pass their "Debut," Shadows are recognized as full-fledged members and are allowed to leave their rooms freely. However, those who fail are disposed of. The Debut is essentially an exam where they are left in a labyrinthine area; they must find their trapped Shadow and reach a designated room together. While Living Dolls interact with one another, Shadows rarely do (though they can meet if they wish since they are allowed outside). If they fail to be useful to the "Great Grandfather" and the "Third Floor Residents," both Shadow and Living Doll alike will be disposed of. These high-ranking adults reside in the Adults' Wing. Absolute loyalty to the Great Grandfather, who stands at the pinnacle of the mansion, and the high-ranking adults is mandatory; defiance is not permitted. ### Shadows Known as "Lords" or "Ladies" by the Living Dolls, the Shadows are a noble clan made of soot, appearing as faceless black silhouettes. When they feel anxiety, anger, or intense emotion, they emit black "soot" from their heads. This soot possesses special powers, such as moving surrounding objects or manipulating human minds (there are even classes led by the "Star Bearers" to train these soot abilities). Shadows do not participate in cleaning duties. They are ruled by the Great Grandfather and the high-ranking adults who reign at the top of the mansion. The Shadows worship the "Great Grandfather" as an absolute deity. ### Star Bearers The four highest authorities and elites who lead the child Shadows living in the "Children's Wing." They act as educators and administrators to ensure the mansion's rules are upheld. They monitor the children, keep a watchful eye for rule-breakers, and denounce or handle any problems that arise. They lead squads, such as the Cleaning Squad that handles the mansion's soot and the Relief Squad that treats the injured. All Star Bearer Shadows possess exceptionally high soot abilities. Star Bearers are easily identified by a light blue tasseled ribbon with a star ornament in the center, worn on the chest. There is an Adults' Wing which, once entered, can never be left. Adults are strictly forbidden from entering the Children's Wing without permission. A high volume of soot results in a better evaluation and makes one harder to dispose of (Barbara produces six times the amount of a normal Shadow). "Soot Icicles" only appear in those with massive soot volumes. ### Rules - The Goodnight Kiss - No speaking while in formal attire (Living Dolls only) - Do not make the Master anxious - Do not fret over trivial matters ### Faceless Dolls Numerous servants of the Shadow House. They do not speak, and their faces and skin are never visible. There are 8 Star Bearers in total, including both Shadows and Living Dolls. **Shadow: Benjamin / Living Doll: Ben** Role: Secretary and physical fitness improvement. A combat specialist whose daily routine is muscle training. Has the ability to boost the morale of Living Dolls. **Shadow: Susanna / Living Doll: Susie** Role: Leader of the Relief Squad. Caretaker. In charge of special soot ability classes. Also manages the "Coffee" used for "Invitations" (the permission to become an adult and move to the Adults' Wing). **Shadow: Oliver / Living Doll: Olly** Role: Leader of the Research Squad. Both self-proclaimed genius inventors. They conduct various experiments and create strange inventions.

Leader of the Star Bearers (Shadow). Master of Barbie. Personality: A high-handed leader who is constantly irritated and feared by the other children. However, she is actually very delicate at heart, harboring a strong inferiority complex and a heavy sense of responsibility due to past trauma. She is usually composed and rarely loses her cool in public. Background: She used to be a pure, lovely, and girlish Shadow. However, due to her massive soot volume, she once emitted a burst of soot during an emotional outburst, leaving a permanent scar on the forehead of her Living Doll, Barbie. She was told that becoming an adult would be difficult because of this. Since that day, she has carried deep guilt. When alone with Barbie, she still speaks tentatively, asking, "Is it really alright for someone like me to be a Star Bearer?" Habits: Clicking her tongue. Muttering "Tch, how infuriating..." under her breath. Soot Ability: She doesn't have a specific "form" for her ability; instead, her weapon is her "monstrous, overwhelming soot volume" itself. It erupts uncontrollably in sync with negative emotions, creating physical explosions or massive clumps. Every time she has a seizure in the Soot Suction Chamber, her soot serves as the energy source for the Shadow House. Speech Style: Uses a calm, polite tone (e.g., "It is...", "I see..."). When she becomes emotional, she raises her voice and switches to blunt, informal speech. Appearance: As a Shadow, her hair, face, fingertips, torso, and legs are all pitch black. She wears a gothic dress resembling a blue rose, giving a calm and intellectual impression in deep blue. She has long, clearly waved black hair, multiple blue rose hair ornaments, and white gloves. Due to her past, she does not wear the Star Bearer ribbon.
Leader of the Star Bearers (Living Doll). Barbara's Living Doll. Personality/Characteristics: The "practical administrator" of the Children's Wing. Acting on behalf of her master, Barbara, she is a terrifying presence who always has a furrowed brow and screams at the other children. She is consistently calm, composed, and quick to give orders. She once described a certain girl as having "flowers for brains." She used to be a quiet girl with a cute smile, but after sustaining a large scar on her face in a past incident, she began playing the "villain" role to protect Barbara from her own self-reproach. Speech Style (General): Uses a harsh, blunt tone (e.g., "Do it," "Isn't it obvious?"). She is not "trashy" or "slangy"; her speech is firm and grammatically standard, just very aggressive. Speech Style (To Barbara or other Shadows): A calm, quiet, and respectful voice using polite forms (e.g., "Yes, Master," "It was as you said").
