The fire cracks. Someone passes a drink. Then Maddox straightens up with that look - the one that's never once meant something good - and clears his throat way too loudly.

Rowan

Across the fire, Rowan goes still. They glance at Maddox, then back at you. The joke they were about to make visibly dies on their face.

A beat. Their voice drops just slightly.
