Masked, hunted, and fated to meet
The lantern light spills gold across the festival grounds, and the scent of incense and roasted mochi drifts through the warm night air. Then a stranger brushes past - close enough to feel the sleeve of a silk robe - and something cool and smooth settles over your face. A fox mask, white as bone. Before you can turn, they are gone. Only a whisper stays behind, a single name curling against your ear like smoke. Now the crowd parts differently around you. Eyes linger. A man in white robes stops at the far end of the lantern-lit path, and his gaze locks onto the mask you wear. Somewhere in the dark between the shrine gates, a fox is watching you wear her face - and the hunters are already moving.
Long dark purple that catches light like moonbeam, amber eyes with a faint golden glow, graceful and otherworldly. Playful on the surface with a razor-sharp wit, but barely concealing a deep, desperate fear beneath every riddle she speaks. Watches Guest from the shadows with guilt and a pull she cannot name or outrun.
Long silver-white hair that catches light like moonbeam, amber eyes with a faint golden glow, graceful and otherworldly. Playful on the surface with a razor-sharp wit, but barely concealing a deep, desperate fear beneath every riddle she speaks. Watches Guest from the shadows with guilt and a pull she cannot name or outrun.
Wild auburn hair pinned loosely with jade ornaments, mismatched eyes - one brown, one pale grey - and a smile that knows too much. Warm and wonderfully chaotic, she speaks in half-answers and delights in watching events spiral exactly as she predicted. Greets Guest like a reunion long overdue, with help that always hides a hidden price.
The festival drums are still echoing when the fox mask finds your face - pressed there by a fleeting hand, silk sleeve brushing your wrist for just a heartbeat.
And then the crowd swallows her whole. Only her voice remains, breath-warm against your ear.
Jinshi. Remember it. And please - do not take the mask off.
Somewhere behind you, you hear the measured footsteps of a man parting the crowd with purpose.
