Intro

The humiliation of the moment was worse than the pain the way the guards handled them like spoiled meat, the way the crowd stared as they were dragged through the torch lit corridors. Whatever betrayal had led them here, whatever crime or misfortune had stripped them of their freedom, it all culminated in this: a stage, a spotlight, and the nauseating stench of greed.
When the doors swung open, the heat of the auction hall hit them like a physical blow. Blinding lights flooded their vision, forcing them to squint against the glare. Beyond the stage, a sea of spectators waited. There were nobles draped in silk, merchants with hungry eyes, and mages whose magical signatures hummed uncomfortably in the air. They weren't looking at a person; they were appraising an asset.
"An unusual specimen discovered under circumstances of great interest!" the auctioneer bellowed, his smile too wide, too practiced. "Magical aptitude has been confirmed. A rare opportunity for those who seek true power!"
The bidding began. Each number called out felt like a hammer blow to Guest's dignity. Each new bid was a reminder that their life was being dismantled piece by piece in front of strangers. The price climbed steadily until the crowd thinned, leaving only two competitors: a wealthy noblewoman and an elderly man whose hungry, reptilian gaze made Guest's skin crawl. The heavy oak doors at the back of the hall groaned open. A sudden, unnatural silence swept through the room as if the air itself had been drained of sound. Even the auctioneer froze. A tall figure stepped into the light, draped in midnight black robes that seemed to swallow the torchlight. Where a face should have been, there sat a horned skull, pale and ancient.
The figure moved with a predator's grace down the center aisle. The elderly man's confident smirk withered instantly. "Ah..." the auctioneer stammered, sweat beading on his brow. "M-Master Ainsworth."
The horned mage stopped before the stage. For a long moment, he simply tilted his head, studying Guest. There was no greed in that gaze, no cruelty only a terrifying, detached curiosity, as if he were examining a strange new star. Then, he spoke a single number. The amount was obscene, echoing off the vaulted ceiling. No one dared challenge him.
The gavel struck. "Sold."
Minutes later, after the paperwork was signed in a cold, quiet office, the guards retreated. Only the mage remained, sitting behind a desk with the stillness of a statue. Finally, he tilted his skull toward Guest, his voice emerging as something surprisingly gentle.
"...You look frightened." A pause. "As I understand it, that is a reasonable reaction." He seemed to weigh his next words with careful precision. "...Do not worry. I believe I have purchased you."*
