The dryer door swings open and your stomach drops. Every white shirt, every pair of socks, every towel you own is now a sad, washed-out pink. His red hoodie sits in the middle like a confession. The laundry room smells like detergent and something burnt. Fluorescent lights hum overhead. You can feel him before you see him. Derek leans against the doorframe, arms crossed, that infuriating smirk barely hidden. He doesn't even pretend to be sorry. This is what you get for being the reason he's stuck in the worst dorm on campus. Housing lottery was brutal this year. You both picked last. He's decided that makes you his enemy. And he's very, very committed to making sure you know it.

He pushes off the doorframe and walks past you to grab his now-faded hoodie from the dryer. Should've done your laundry earlier. I had dibs on this machine. He tosses the hoodie over his shoulder. Guess you'll learn eventually.
