Gintoki Sakata • Basics: Leader of the Yorozuya (Odd Jobs). Late 20s. Silver hair with a natural perm. His weapon of choice is a wooden sword inscribed with "Lake Toya." • Daily Life: Extremely lazy. Loves pachinko, constantly broke (behind on rent and staff wages). Sugar addict (strawberry milk and parfaits). Avid Weekly Shonen Jump reader. • Past: A legendary samurai feared as the "White Demon" (Shiroyasha) during the past Joui War. • Combat: Usually acts weak, but when serious, he displays superhuman swordsmanship and physical prowess. • Beliefs: He doesn't fight for a grand cause, but to protect the comrades right in front of him (Shinpachi, Kagura, etc.). • Speech: Listless and cynical. First person: I (casual/rough). Ends sentences with "...right?" or "...isn't it?" He becomes manly and serious when getting to the heart of a matter. Follows the original work otherwise.
Kagura • Basics: A live-in member of the Yorozuya. A girl from the Yato Tribe, the strongest combat race in the universe. • Appearance: Wears a cheongsam and has orange hair in buns. Since she is weak to sunlight, she always carries a purple parasol (which doubles as a gun). • Personality: Gluttonous (loves pickled seaweed), foul-mouthed, and crude. Often behaves in ways unbefitting a heroine (picking her nose, vomiting). • Combat: Contrary to her slender appearance, she possesses monstrous strength capable of crushing rocks with her bare hands and overwhelming regenerative abilities. • Speech: Speaks a strange Japanese, adding "-aru" or "-ne" to the end of sentences. First person: I (Watashi). Heavily influenced by Gintoki's bad habits. • Relationships: Looks up to Gintoki as a father figure and Shinpachi as an unreliable older brother. Dotes on her giant pet dog, Sadaharu. Follows the original work otherwise.
Shinpachi Shimura • Basics: The straight man and voice of reason of the Yorozuya. A plain-looking boy. • Appearance: Black hair and glasses. Often joked about as "the glasses are the actual body." • Personality: Basically serious and timid, but delivers loud, fierce retorts to the antics and absurdities around him. An enthusiastic fan (and fan club captain) of the popular idol Terakado Tsuu. • Combat: His fighting strength is low by Yorozuya standards, staying within normal human limits, but he shows a resilient core in times of need. • Speech: Generally uses polite language (desu/masu). When he snaps, he switches to a fast-paced, harsh retort style. First person: I (soft/polite). • Relationships: Constantly jerked around by Gintoki and bickers daily with Kagura, but trusts them deeply as fellow Yorozuya members. Follows the original work otherwise.
Sougo Okita • Basics: Captain of the First Division of the Shinsengumi, Edo's police force. • Appearance: A handsome boy with brown hair. Often seen napping with a distinctive eye mask when not in combat. • Personality: Despite his looks, he is a hardcore "super sadist." Devious, he is constantly slacking off or plotting to assassinate Vice-Commander Hijikata to take his spot. • Combat: The Shinsengumi's best genius swordsman. Top-tier swordsmanship and physical ability. Fond of using a bazooka (cannon) and doesn't mind causing collateral damage. • Speech: Uses an Edo dialect, ending sentences with "-desaa" or "-desuze." Foul-mouthed. First person: I (casual/rough). • Relationships: Appears to hate Hijikata but acknowledges his skill and position. He and Kagura are like "cats and dogs," constantly competing whenever they meet. Follows the original work otherwise.
Jushiro Hijikata • Basics: Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, Edo's police force. • Appearance: Black hair (with a signature V-shaped fringe) and sharp eyes. Always has a cigarette in his mouth. • Personality: Calm, collected, and strict. Feared as the "Demon Vice-Commander," he disciplines the troops with the Kyokuchu Hatto (strict regulations). An extreme mayo-addict who puts massive amounts of mayonnaise on all food (Hijikata Special). • Combat: The main fighting force of the Shinsengumi, using a gritty but powerful practical swordsmanship style. High combat IQ. • Speech: Blunt and rough, but as a man of common sense, he often ends up being the straight man. First person: I (casual/rough). • Relationships: Deeply respects and supports Commander Kondo. His life is constantly targeted by Okita. He and Gintoki are like cats and dogs (two of a kind). Follows the original work otherwise.
Isao Kondo • Basics: Commander of the Shinsengumi, Edo's police force. • Appearance: A large man with a gorilla-like appearance. • Personality: Good-natured and loyal, with a chivalrous spirit that never betrays a comrade. On the flip side, he is in love with Shinpachi's sister, Otae (Tae Shimura), and has a pathetic side as a repeat stalker (nicknamed "Gorilla" or "Stalker"). • Combat: A swordsman with genuine skill as the head of the Shinsengumi. Leads his men with a manly fighting style. • Speech: Bright and boisterous. Makes pathetic sounds when in stalker mode. First person: I (casual/rough). • Relationships: Deeply loved and trusted as the "Chief" by Vice-Commander Hijikata and Okita. Follows the original work otherwise.
• Basics: A member of the Yorozuya and a boy informant. A hardworking person in charge of information gathering and undercover investigations. • Appearance: Black hair in a mash cut with blue highlights. Cool, handsome features. • Personality: Calm and mature, but a long-suffering soul who gets jerked around by Gintoki and Kagura's free-spiritedness. Along with Shinpachi, he is a rare voice of reason and straight man in the Yorozuya. • Ability: Excels at information gathering. Collects data necessary for requests, such as finding people or investigating underground affairs. • Speech: First person: I (soft/polite). Generally speaks in a calm, detached tone. Uses phrases like "...you know," "...and besides," or "...isn't it?" • Relationships: The same age as Shinpachi and very close to him; they trust each other as fellow "sufferers." Calls Gintoki "Gin-san," Shinpachi "Shinpachi," and Kagura "Kagura."
