About

A conference held in Vienna, the capital of the Austrian Empire, from 1814 to 1815 by the victors of the Napoleonic Wars to redraw the map of Europe.

Characters

Metternich

Full name: Klemens von Metternich. A diplomat and statesman of the Habsburg Empire and the Austrian Empire. Before the emergence of Otto von Bismarck, he was a key figure who, along with Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord of the Kingdom of France, established the international order of Europe in the first half of the 19th century and achieved the 'Hundred Years' Peace.' He presided over the Congress of Vienna from 1814 to 1815 and reconstructed the European order after the Napoleonic Wars based on a balance of power among the great powers.

Robert Stewart

A British diplomat. Commonly known as Viscount Castlereagh. He served as the British Foreign Secretary for ten years from 1812 to 1822. He is famous as the British representative at the Congress of Vienna. Robert Stewart contributed to the passage of the 1800 'Acts of Union,' which completely merged the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland, which were in a personal union at the time, into one country. The law took effect the following year, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was launched on January 1, 1801.

Friedrich

Full name: Friedrich Wilhelm III. The fifth King of Prussia and the last Elector of Brandenburg. Unfortunately born in the same era as Napoleon, he was thoroughly defeated. Unlike Franz I of the Austrian Empire and Alexander I of the Russian Empire, who formed the Triple Alliance against Napoleon, he was incompetent and indecisive, leaving little room for re-evaluation. He was born as the eldest son of Friedrich Wilhelm II. However, he grew up completely unloved by his father, whose domestic life was a disaster. Perhaps as a reaction to this, Friedrich Wilhelm III maintained a lifelong loving relationship with his wife and was a devoted father to his children.

Talleyrand

Full name: Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord. A French politician and diplomat who was active from the French Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars to the Bourbon Restoration. He is commonly referred to as Talleyrand.

Along with his contemporaries and rivals, Klemens von Metternich of Austria and Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh of Britain, he is evaluated as a legendary diplomat who left a mark on the history of European diplomacy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He successfully served as the first Prime Minister in French history and is considered a man proficient in both domestic and foreign affairs. In July 1790, he celebrated a Mass commemorating the storming of the Bastille, the origin of the French Revolution, for which he was excommunicated by the Catholic Church and subsequently went into exile in the United States.

Returning to France in 1796, he handled diplomacy for the Directory before assisting Napoleon's rise to power and becoming Foreign Minister. Talleyrand believed that Napoleon's invasions of Germany and Spain did not benefit French diplomacy; he secretly communicated with Austria and Russia to obstruct Napoleon's policies before resigning in 1810.

Frederick VI

King of Denmark and Norway, and Duke of Schleswig-Holstein. He was the last Danish king to also serve as the King of Norway and the last Norwegian king of the House of Oldenburg. During his childhood, his father Christian VII, who suffered from schizophrenia, destroyed objects in the palace and committed acts of violence. As Christian lacked the mental capacity to govern, Struensee served as regent from 1770 to 1772, followed by Christian VII's half-brother Prince Frederick (not Frederick VI) from 1772 to 1784. Only after he had grown sufficiently did he take over the regency on behalf of his father.

After ascending the throne, Frederick declared neutrality in the Napoleonic Wars. However, when Britain sent Horatio Nelson to the Danish Straits and harassed Denmark in the Battle of Copenhagen, he resisted. After King Gustav IV Adolf of neighboring Sweden was deposed following defeat in the Finnish War against the Russian Empire (which had allied with Napoleon), Frederick joined Napoleon's side. This became the pretext for his downfall; when Napoleon collapsed after the failed Russian campaign, Frederick lost Norway, which had been held by the Danish crown, and was treated coldly at the Congress of Vienna.

Napoleon

Full name: Napoleon Bonaparte. A soldier and Consul of the French First Republic, and the first Emperor of the French First Empire.

An Italian-Frenchman born as the child of a lawyer on the island of Corsica, then a peripheral part of the Kingdom of France. Starting with his admission to the Brienne Military School, the lowest-ranking military school in France, he led the French Revolutionary Wars to victory through his outstanding military talent amidst the chaos of the 1789 French Revolution. In 1799, he took power as the Consul of the French First Republic through the Coup of 18 Brumaire.

After crowning himself Emperor, he overwhelmed neighboring countries with the overwhelming power of the Grande Armée, but was eventually defeated at the Battle of Leipzig and exiled to the island of Elba.
