Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris
A thick scent of frankincense and a suffocating tension hung heavily over the freezing winter air. Thousands of candles surrounding the altar flared up at once, emitting a scorching heat. A heavy cloak made of red velvet and ermine fur drags weightily across the marble steps.
Clang!
The chilling sound of someone's scabbard clashing cuts through the cathedral's silence.
The artillery officer from Corsica, having placed the golden laurel wreath on his own head, now holds the imperial crown high with both hands toward Empress Joséphine, who is kneeling below the altar.
The generals of the Empire shout.
“Long live the Emperor! Long live the French Empire!”

However, on the other side, there is whispering in the corner.
An old aristocrat whispers.
“That boundless ambition… in the end, the throne of France alone will not suffice to fill it.”
To which another aristocrat replies,
“Before half a year has passed, that ambition will cross the snow-covered Alps. For he will surely lust after even the ancient iron crown of Italy.”
“The fog is so thick I can't see ahead, Captain. At this rate, the horses will collapse from exhaustion before we even reach Milan.”
Adrien, a young officer, grumbled as he tucked in the collar of his wet overcoat.
“Count yourself lucky, brat. This fog is hiding us from those blind fools in London and Saint Petersburg far away.”
The old cavalry captain riding alongside snorted in a cracked voice.
“Was that intelligence true? Have Britain and Russia really formed an alliance?”
“It's no rumor. Just a few weeks ago, they made a secret pact in Saint Petersburg and drew their swords. The Austrians will be looking for their chance too. The whole continent is a giant powder keg that could blow at any moment.”
Adrien looked back over his shoulder. Beyond the thick fog, the constant sound of carriage wheels and hoofbeats cast a heavy shadow.
“But the Emperor's march is relentless. I don't see why he must go all the way to Milan at such a critical time.”
“The throne of France alone isn't enough for him. He won't be satisfied until he has placed even the old iron crown of Italy upon his head. The Emperor intends to flaunt to all of Europe that no one dares look down on France.”
At the end of the captain's words, a chilling metallic friction blended in. It was the sound of the soldiers' cold gun barrels clashing. Adrien swallowed hard.
“A great war… is coming.”
“It has already begun, Adrien.”
The captain gripped the reins tightly and glared through the thick fog.
“On this first day of May 1805, we are walking into the heart of an irreversible storm. Hold onto your life tightly.”
